Worst. Lock. Ever. I had high hopes for this product. It has promise, and does work well once you get used to the technique of swiping your finger. I had a few months of bliss after getting used swiping my finger and rarely needed to use my keys. They just don't hold up. I've had several components replaced in less than a year, and the lock has failed again. The sensor simply will not register anything, reading 'sensor error' on each attempt.
Perhaps another company has produced a stable and less quirky lock. If you're looking for a reliable lock for key-less entry, this is not the product.

Bought this lock a few years ago. The '3 taps to lock' feature worked well. However the 'swipe to unlock' is almost worthless:
1) After MANY tries registering several people we all finally managed to get a 'good' print. Speed of swipe is very important as is using the same part of the finger.
2) Swiping to unlock was a 'maybe/maybe not' affair. And when it did unlock, it frequently 'recognized' the print of another registered user. (The display inside shows the person matched). Clearly my fingerprint doesn't match my wife's but it said she had swiped when it was me. This did not make us feel real comfortable that it wouldn't let just anyone in if they tried enough times.
Definitely would NOT buy again. Very expensive and not particularly more functional than a regular keyed deadbolt. I am now looking for a fingerprint biometric lock, not a finger swipe lock. I don't need a key for my car and I don't want to need one for my house either.

I have read all the previous reviews, and i have to tell them that they are wrong. I have given access to a lot of people without any problems.
First of all, and this is the main reason why people cant operate the lock... you have to make more than one registry for your same finger. Why? beacuse it depens if its cold, hot, or you just came from the shower.. you fingerprint doesnt change but you have to remember that you are swiping the unit and not pressing into it. So bottom line.. i have this unit, i am very happy with it, if you have difficulties accessing, just register another time your fingerprint, this way there will be no drawbacks.

Like you, I sometimes go against Amazon reviews and order an item, regardless of a poor review. This often works out fine.
However, I'm warning you now, pay attention to the negative reviews on this product. I've had TWO of this product (brass trim) since the summer of 2006, not purchased through Amazon, and paid two hundred and fifty for each. Both of these biometric deadbolts perform similarly - very poor. One can imagine that after three years of swiping fingers and re-enrolling fingerprints into memory, we kind of have an idea of the issues with this product, and how to swipe a finger consistently (first thing the service people will say).
They are outside temperature sensitive. When the cold comes, it's time to enroll new prints for the family. Don't know about the direct sunlight issue, as one of mine gets just early morning sun, and the other gets no sun.
Subdermal scan? Naaah... do some yard work or construction that roughs up your hands a bit and you better have that key handy. Count on enrolling new prints or not using it until your skin heals up a bit.
Here is how we get the gizmo to work the best (EDIT: and we shouldn't have to do the following steps because all of the following reduce security) and even then it just seems to forget us and we have to enroll new prints all over again. What we do is just enroll (scan) one finger for each person instead of one from each hand, but we scan that one finger not less than 10 times into memory. It increases the odds that the scanner will recognize us. If I had my way I would scan two or three fingers ten times each to be really sure but you can only scan in 50 prints and with four family members you can't do that for all. The other thing we had to do is use the "normal" scan security setting. No way to use the "high security" setting.
You'll also need to call them to get the factory reset procedure when it refuses to recognize the 'administrator' (the first person to enroll a print). If the administrator can't swipe in then the settings can't be changed and no further enrollments can happen - the memory must be wiped clean and everyone gets rescanned.
It is incredibly frustrating for a 250 dollar gizmo to have you standing in the cold with bags in your hands and your keys buried in layers of clothing, giving you the red blinky light meaning 'scan again'. Contrary to some reviewers apparently being content to scan several times to get the lock open... when I pay this much for this product it better let me in my house the very first try... period. Too much to pay for a gizmo that works intermittently.
If you buy this, be prepared for frustration and keep your key close. And don't show it off to your neighbor, because you'll probably have to swipe your print three times to get in your door and he'll be asking, "is it supposed to take so long to open?". We've had enough of this nonsense and are looking at the Schlage push button lock with 34 reviews and nothing lower than 4 stars.
UPDATE: We ended up buying the Schlage Keypad for two doors. Outstanding lock set. Far easier than the biometrics, 100% reliable, nice styling available, and excellent lock features. Like the idea of no motor spinning the deadbolt back and forth compared to another popular brand, just a gimmick, and not needed as the Schlage deadbolt operation demonstrates. Believe the reviews on the Schlage pushbutton deadbolt. You can get the Schlage in just the basic deadbolt set for an excellent price, but we bought the entire handle set from another dedicated lock website for a much better price than on Amazon. Here is the Amazon link to the set we have now: FE365-CAM-ACC-716 Schlage Keypad Front Entry Set Aged Bronze. Here is the link to one style of the basic Shlage deadbolt set: Schlage BE365VCAM716 Camelot Deadbolt Keypad, Aged Bronze. Look at the excellent reviews of all the different styles of the this deadbolt set - and believe them to be accurate.
We're very pleased and relieved to be free of the Kwikset Biometric silliness.

Several Month Update
This lock continues to work perfectly, I get first swipe recognition every time. Love it.
-------------------------------------------------
2 WEEK UPDATE: Works perfect, first swipe recognition every time using tip #1, below. Scanned several people in with no problems. The timed entry setting is great. Love this lock and would pay a lot more for it.
-------------------------------------------------
I bought this lock after looking at lots of biometric options, so far I'm very happy with it. I think the price was fair to low for the advanced scanning features, the smart-key hardware, and build quality.
One thing I didn't like--although it was well packed--a few smudges and a small nick make me wonder if it was a refurb. I've read other reviews that say the same thing. Nothing major. I had some trouble finding the polished brass finish so I overlooked it. Also, the interior housing is mostly white textured plastic with matching metal accents. I actually like it for my door, but was a little surprised. General build quality seems solid.
Installation was a breeze, but if you don't look at the pics closely you could miss installing the metal ring that sits under keyed part of the lock assembly. Also only shown in picture form, is the orientation of the ribbon cable as it inserts into the back of the interior assembly. And no where does it say to secure the ribbon connection by sliding the socket's plastic retaining clip down to lock it in place. I know how to lock ribbon cables in their sockets from working on PCs and laptops, but some might not catch this very simple step.
Be careful when enrolling the first user. The initial scan will be the first administrator, so if you don't get a repeatable scan, you will lock yourself out of the system. I made this mistake by playing with the lock before it was on the door. I got repeated recognition before the lock was installed, but once it was on the door it wouldn't recognize my swipe. I had to enter the factory code of Aaaa (found it on the internet) to reset the lock. The reset code is not included in the paperwork.
The lock works great. No problems with finger recognition after installing it. It wouldn't even require much practice if the manual didn't do a good job of hiding the best tips in the FAQ. I think these would help others who have posted problems getting the lock to recognize their fingers on the first try. Three tips are particularly helpful:
1) When you place your finger under the scanner, hold it still for a fraction of a second until the lock "wakes up" (LED lights up orange) before pulling your finger across. This is the ONLY way to get the scanner to recognize your first swipe. After realizing this, I get single swipe recognition 95% of the time.
2) Enroll your primary finger several times under separate user IDs. This seems very helpful to recognize children who are not as consistent with their swipes. The lock displays the user name when it finds a match, so you can see the benefit of doing this.
3) If you have trouble enrolling kids, set the biometrics sensitivity to NORMAL. The default is HIGH. My 9 year old couldn't enroll on HIGH, but has no problem using the lock on HIGH. Enrolling is harder than using the lock since it requires 3 matches in a row. My 6 year old can't enroll on NORMAL.
The lock has a great features list:
- Simple installation (requires 3 wood/metal screws to mount the interior housing)
- Very discrete; no way to leave the outside scanner opened up
- Looks great inside and out
- Excellent fingerprint recognition and no false positives so far
- Simple, intuitive electronic menus
- Great admin features, like limited access times per user
- Doesn't lose the finger database without power
The only features I would add are auto-locking after a specified time delay, and a log to view who opened the door and when.
Overall, I didn't expect to be this happy with the lock. A nice surprise.
