How It Works

Schlage LiNK System Components

It works like this:
  • Through your computer or cell phone, the Bridge receives a signal from your home's wireless network.
  • The Bridge sends another wireless signal to the lockset.
  • The door unlocks.

Computer and Wireless Phone Interface

A user-friendly interface is at the heart of the Schlage LiNK system and makes it easy to take advantage of all that Schlage LiNK has to offer. Simply log-on to your computer or internet enabled phone and you're in control. With just a few simple clicks you can unlock your door, see who's come home, and even add and delete user codes.

System Requirements FAQs
  1. Do I need a wireless network in my home?
No, but you will need a high speed internet connection (cable modem, dsl, etc.)

  2. What kind of cell phone do I need to have?
Nearly any modern cell phone can receive text alerts from Schlage LiNK. But to take full advantage of the system's features, you'll need a data enabled phone like a BlackBerry or iPhone.

  3. Do I have to pay to download the software to my phone?
It depends. Some service providers charge a fee, while others don't. To know for sure, you'll need to check with your carrier.

  4. What is the range of the Schlage LiNK Bridge?
The Schlage LiNK Bridge can relay signals up to 100 feet--even through walls. With out walls in the way, it can broadcast even farther. The included light module can increase the range of the system by functioning as a repeater.

  5. Is it secure?
Like all Schlage products, Schlage LiNK is very secure. In fact, it features security measures similar to those used in online banking systems.

  6. Does the system require a monthly subscription fee?
A minimal monthly subscription fee is required. Even if you choose not to subscribe, Schlage LiNK will still function as a keypad lock or keypad deadbolt.

Z-Wave. The brains behind the brilliance.
Z-Wave. Products that speak Z-Wave work together better.

Z-Wave is a next-generation wireless "ecosystem" that lets all your home electronics talk to each other, and to you, via remote control. It uses simple, reliable, low-power radio waves that easily travel through walls, floors and cabinets. Z-Wave functionality can be added to almost any electronic device in your house, even devices that you wouldn't ordinarily think of as "intelligent," such as appliances, window shades, thermostats and home lighting.

The Schlage LiNK solution lets you control these devices in ways that give you complete command even when you're not at home yourself. You can control your Z-Wave household remotely from a PC and the Internet from anywhere in the world... even through your cell phone.

"Great product, but lousy instructions." 2010-04-07
By Jonathan Nichols (Dallas, TX)
I actually purchased the keypad + deadbolt unit from Lowes because they had a good special going on ($249 with 3 months of Link for free!) and had no problems getting it installed. The instructions for the physically installation were just fine, but the instructions for setting everything else up were useless. I say useless because the directions were to a URL that was something like "[...]" - which doesn't exist. The online documentation that I did find was very confusing and seemed like they were trying to use one instruction sheet for half the product line instead of having easy to read PDF files for each product. What was AWESOME were the YouTube videos. They very quickly explained what the manual failed to explain, and I was off and running.

Negative:
* Documentation is awful.

Positive:
* iPhone app is awesome! You can check the battery status, status of Lights, Security, and your Z-Wave enabled thermostat. You can also view the Schlage webcam if you have one (not sure about third party ones) and can set a one time use code or unlock the door.
* YouTube setup videos made up for the lousy documentation. Seriously. Schlage should just embed them in their support site because they were that helpful.
* Device is easy to use and is made even easier by the Schlage Link website.

Notes:
* Deadbolt is NOT MOTORIZED!! Folks often think that it's a motorized device that will unlock the door for you. This isn't the case. A human being still has to be in front of the lock to turn the deadbolt to open it. Some think this is a negative, but I think it's actually a security feature.
* It does include some pre-programmed user codes. I removed them and added my own through the web interface.
* It includes a set of keys so you can use it to override the deadbolt.
* In order to get the Z-Wave stuff to learn about the device, you have to register everything online first. When you're getting the Z-Wave bridge to learn about the deadbolt, you actually have to hold the bridge right up next to the deadbolt. Same goes for the lighting controller.
* The lighting controller can only be used with an incandescent light source. No CFLs. Not sure about LED units, though.
* You can set it to send you a text message or email (or both) upon certain actions. We have ours set to send us a text message when the kid gets home.
* The Kid was also notorious for running out to play and leaving the house unlocked because he didn't want to bring his key. This is no longer an issue because all he has to do is press a button and turn a knob to lock the door. No key for him to worry about, and no key for him to lose. (Sneaky kids will probably learn that the alerts aren't sent if the door is unlocked. I'd like to see Schlage add an option to alert us if the door is left unlocked for a certain amount of time.)

Overall, we have been very happy with the purchase. Aside from the initial setup woes, we've had no problems with it whatsoever.

I could write a lengthy review of this product but that would just add to the wasted time and investment on this product...

By Samer Khouli (San Diego, CA United States)
I just had the bronze color set up and its great. I don't get why its 12.99 a month, but it does work cool with lightest, cell phone etc. and I had NO PROBLEMS. Its really kind of freaking me out ... but I'm super happy with the product.

"Schlage LiNK Excellent Product Excessive Price" 2009-11-05
By A. Specht (Sacramento, CA USA)
I was very happy about the arrival of my Schlage LiNK door lock. It was easy to install, taking only about a half hour to replace an existing lock on my front door. It is also easy to use once setup. The setup process is a little complicated, requiring carrying the wireless connector to within a few feet of each device to be included in each individual's home system and pushing several buttons in a timed period. There are no included combination programming instructions included although the instructions state that such programming is possible. After the more than $300 dollar purchase, to find that the entire wireless operation won't work unless you subscribe to the $12.99 per month web service was very upsetting, especially since I only have one lock. The same lock, without the wireless capability can be had for about half the price. If I had to do it again, Although I love the lock, I would not have purchased it had I known the service was required and cost so much.

"Monthly Fee Too High. Lets compare another monthly rate...." 2009-11-04
By Jerry A. (Chicago, IL)
$12.99 per month. $155.88 per year. It's simply too much money for such a service. It's a lock, and it allows you to type in a number to unlock the handle/deadbolt, something that has existed for years. Now, paying $244.95+ just isn't worth it. Let me tell you why.

You are paying $12.99 for a 'web-interface', which you can access from any computer or cellphone. Why? So you can view which locks (all of which you have to purchase for inflated prices @ $178.20* ............that's $244.95 (starter kit...mind you it's the satin nickel finish which is the cheapest), $178.20 x 2 (additional deadbolts), plus $199.99 x 3 (schlage link wireless doorhandles) = $1201.32. Plus $12.99/month. And that would just cover my 3 bedroom condo w/ 3 exit doors. Also, you may think 'i will just purchase the deadbolts'...and that's perfectly fine if you never forget your keys, or only use the deadbolt for security. Otherwise you will still be locked out due to the doorhandle that is locked.

You want something secure? Look into the company 'Mul-T-Lock', just Google them. They are the audio's world equivalent to Klipsch, the best. You might think Bose has the best audio, but that's just because they advertise on TV and are expensive (a lot like the Ionic Breeze...remember how THAT ran Sharper Image into bankruptcy? lulz!). I digress. Mul-T-Lock keys cannot be copied and the locks cannot be bumped. And for their typical deadbolts and handles, you will pay a bit less (without a monthly fee), for the same 3-door setup that I used as an example. Alternatively, you can opt for their CLIQ system, which utilizes encrypted codes that can generate a) a key that is the only working key for a unit (not reproducible), has time-based permissions (only opens doors between certain hours), and data tracking via your computer. How's that for security?

Other examples....
You probably won't use this daily. The keypad to open the door, yes. But you can buy one of those at any major hardware store for $100 or less (with no monthly fee....and yes they are 'wireless'...they run on batteries). However, I do use my Viper SmartStart every day. This starts my car from my cellphone. I use it in the winter, I use it in the summer. Everyday. What's their fee? $29.99...per year. And come to think of it, I don't use it just once a day but multiple times.

If you are that paranoid about security, you should probably move into a bunker, buy a gun, or just move away from other people. No, really, buy a surveillance system that you can monitor on the web, they are fairly cheap & include DVR hardware & nightvision & are wireless. Security is important, but I live in (downtown) Chicago (not Southlake, TX like it says on my signature) & don't need these inferior locks (the reason I am returning mine) - Where do you live?

*My prices are approximate estimates, but should be fairly accurate.
