When I decided to convert a standard lever to a privacy lever, I went cheap with this one, and I got what I paid for. Yeah, it works OK, but it just feels cheaper and operates less smoothly. It is difficult to describe, but it is like comparing the ride of a cheap car with the ride of a more expensive one. It is hard to put your finger on it, but it just feels different. For starters, my Schlage levers are quieter, but it is more than that. The Schlage levers fit tighter in the door, as well, and they operate like a finely tuned machine. This lever, on the other hand, just gets the job done. If that is what you want, then you will be fine with it. Personally, my standards had been raised by Schlage, and I was disappointed.

"A Great Disappointment"2010-04-21 By S. F. Hazell Schlage has cheapened their knobs in every way conceivable. The metal is thinner, the knobs smaller, the metalwork is shoddy, the lock feels chintzy when you turn it, and on and on. I went out of my way to buy Schlage, thinking it was better than your average lower-priced knob. Boy, was I wrong. I installed three of them to replace knobs with tarnished finishes and had them all off and ready to return by the next night. Save your time and money and get something better. These scream junk!

"This electronic deadbolt is junk!"2010-03-10 By Jennifer Miller (WI, United States) We installed our Kwikset smartcode electronic deadbolt in August 2008. The electronics failed by December 2009 and the electronic warranty expires after 1 year. We contacted Kwikset's warranty department and they informed us that for $45, they would be happy to send us a new electronic unit, with no additional warranty that we could install ourselves! I will never buy their products again, save your money!
"Can not suggest this lock, look else where."2010-02-13 By ATLCORSA (FL) Read the other reviews, my expereince is the same. The unit failed within 1 year, while it worked, it was great, we could set up a second entry code for our friends or house guest and not have to worry about getting a key back from them. But at last, the unit started beeping on it own then kills the batteries within 24 hours. It's obviously a design flaw.
The real pain in the butt is that you have to drill holes into your door to install this unit. Holes that won't be covered by any other door lock on the market. So when this unit fails,(which is highly likely) you'll be face with replacing your door or finding an exact replacement. I have a metal door, I might be able to take it somewhere and have it fixed. What a PITA.
This is an old model that you should avoid. The newer models are much smaller so you won't have to drill the 5 extra holes this one takes. It will cost you more but will be worth it. It is installed on my back door behind a storm door, so it's never affected by the weather. It is great to be able to go out and only carry the spare car key or when I'm out working in the garage and the Wife wants to lock up and she forgets I don't have my keys with me. I like it better than the Schalge version since this one retracts the deadbolt for me. The only drawback is the design of the inside part. It has a big ugly plastic part to hold all the electronics. I would buy one for all my doors if they were not so expensive.

"Looks good, works great, easy to install"2010-03-24 By D. Matheny (Austin, TX) These are the exact same Schlage knobs that you can buy at Lowe's or Home Depot, but the price is a lot better here on Amazon.
After living in our house for 5 years, the original brass builder knobs were looking horrible so we went through and replaced all the knobs in our downstairs with these. We also replaced the other hardware; such as hinges, door stops, etc... at the same time. The results were amazing and it really made a huge difference in how our house looked.
Two years later we decided to replace all the knobs upstairs and we had the same results. These look a lot better than the standard builder-grade knobs and they hold up a lot better too.
These aren't the high-dollar solid knobs, but they do look good and they hold up great to abuse. We have 3 kids and it seems like all their friends are always here playing - and the knobs still look and function great after 2 years. We've been really pleased with them.
As far as the installation goes, these really couldn't be easier. If you can work a screwdriver, you can install these knobs. The passage knobs can be installed facing either direction - so I try to set them up so the screws will be visible on the side where people are less likely to see. In the case of a closet, I would face the screws into the closet and the clean side would be facing out.
If you're looking for good knobs to dress up your house just a bit, then I highly recommend these.
